Nearly every article about it covers desk work and chores. Almost none cover exercise, which is strange, because "I know what to do and I can't make myself start" is the whole reason people reach for it in the first place.

What Body Doubling Actually Is

A body double is a person present while you do something you'd struggle to do alone. They don't coach you, supervise you, or share the task. They occupy space nearby, in the room or on a screen, while you work.

The Honest Evidence Position

Here's where most articles on this topic get vague, so let's be direct.

Body doubling has not been tested in controlled trials. Not for chores, not for work, and certainly not for exercise. The ADHD organizations that recommend it acknowledge this openly: the support is anecdotal, and it's strong anecdotal support from a lot of people, but it hasn't been measured.

What does have evidence is the older idea it borrows from. Social facilitation, the observation that people perform differently when others are present, has been studied since the 1890s.

The definitive summary is Bond and Titus (1983), published in Psychological Bulletin, which pooled 241 studies covering close to 24,000 participants. Two findings from it matter here, and neither one is the finding usually quoted.

First, the effect is small. Social presence accounted for somewhere between 0.3 and 3 percent of the variance in task performance. Real, measurable, and modest. Anyone describing body doubling as transformative is describing something the parent literature doesn't support.

Second, and more useful: the direction of the effect depends on the task. Presence of others increased the speed of simple task performance and slightly improved its accuracy. It decreased the speed of complex task performance and impaired accuracy on it.

Company should help with the simple parts

Showing up. Grinding through a set of an exercise you've done a hundred times. Finishing the last interval. Staying on the bike for the full twenty minutes. These are well-learned, effort-limited tasks, exactly the category where presence of others sped things up in the pooled data.

That's most of what a training session is, most of the time.

Company may work against you when you're learning

First time doing a hip hinge. Learning to brace properly. Any lift where you're still assembling the movement pattern and thinking through each piece. That's complex task performance, and it's the category where observation impaired both speed and accuracy.

This is a genuinely useful thing to know, and it runs against the common advice to bring a friend when you start lifting. If you're learning technique, consider doing it alone or with someone actually coaching you, and save the body double for the sessions where you already know what you're doing.

The gym is an accidental body double

It explains something people find confusing: why the same workout is easier at a gym than in a living room. The room is full of people, it has one purpose, and leaving after ten minutes is visible in a way that closing a laptop isn't.

Supervised and group exercise settings do tend to show better adherence than unsupervised ones, and dropout in unsupervised interventions runs high. In the STRRIDE randomized trials, 69 percent of 947 participants completed the intervention and 31 percent dropped out.

The flip side is real too. The same visibility that helps some people is what drives gym anxiety in others. Social presence is a lever, not a universally positive one.

How to Actually Use It

Pick the version with the least overhead. A scheduled call with a friend who's doing their own thing beats coordinating two schedules and a shared gym trip. Overhead is where these arrangements die.

Don't make it a workout partnership. A body double doesn't need to lift with you, match your program, or be into fitness at all. Making it a joint activity adds negotiation, which adds the exact planning burden you were trying to escape.

Use it for the start, not the whole session. The initiation is the expensive part. If someone's there for the first ten minutes, you're usually past the hard bit.

Schedule it with a specific trigger. "We'll work out sometime this week" is not a plan. The same if-then structure that helps with starting a workout when you have ADHD applies to arranging the body double.

When There's Nobody Available

Most people can't produce a human on demand at 7am on a Tuesday. The honest fallback is to ask what the body double was doing for you and replace that function rather than the person.

If it was providing structure, structure is portable: a class with a start time, a pre-written session, a program that opens on one chosen workout so no deciding happens at the moment you're least equipped to decide.
