Every year somebody in the family group chat suggests it: let's do the Turkey Trot before dinner. Then come the real questions. How long is a Turkey Trot, do you have to run the whole thing, and can you get ready in time? Most turkey trots are 5Ks, which is 3.1 miles, and the biggest races welcome walkers. In 2026, Thanksgiving, or Turkey Day, falls on Thursday, November 26, so you have about four weeks.
A turkey trot is also one of the easiest races to say yes to. It's short, it's festive, and nobody expects a personal best on a holiday morning. That's what makes it a good first race if you've been meaning to move more and keep putting it off. A date on the calendar and a few friends at the start line will get you out the door more reliably than a vague plan to get in shape.
This page covers what a turkey trot is, the usual distances with real examples, how long each takes to run or walk, the oldest and biggest trots, whether you can walk one, the calories and a 4-week plan for Thanksgiving 2026. For 5K pace charts and median times by age, see our page on how long a 5K is.
What Is a Turkey Trot?
A turkey trot is a running and walking race held on Thanksgiving morning, usually before the holiday meal. Most are community events open to all ages and abilities, many raise money for local charities, and turkey hats and costumes are part of the fun. The name covers any Thanksgiving race, so a short kids' run and an 8-mile road race can both be turkey trots.
The oldest turkey trot still running is in Buffalo, New York. According to YMCA Buffalo Niagara, its YMCA Turkey Trot began in 1896 with six runners in a five-mile cross-country race, won by Henry A. Allison. The Y calls it the oldest continuously run footrace in the world.
Turkey Trot Distances: From Kids' Fun Runs to 8 Miles
The 5K is the usual turkey trot distance, but the name doesn't fix a length. These examples come from the race websites for Thanksgiving 2026:
| Distance | Miles | Kilometers | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kids' fun run | Varies by race | Varies by race | Silicon Valley Turkey Trot Kids Fun Run, San Jose |
| 5K | 3.1 | 5 | Silicon Valley Turkey Trot 5K run/walk, Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot 5K |
| Manchester Road Race | 4.737 | 7.6 | Manchester, Connecticut, its 90th edition in 2026 |
| 8K | 4.97 | 8 | YMCA Turkey Trot, Buffalo |
| 10K | 6.2 | 10 | Silicon Valley Turkey Trot 10K |
| 8 miles | 8 | 12.9 | Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot |
Distances as each race lists them, except the kids' fun run, whose length each race sets for itself. Mile and kilometer conversions are our arithmetic. If your local trot offers more than one distance, pick the one you can finish comfortably. A 5K takes most people between 30 minutes and an hour, while the 8-mile course in Dallas can take a walker well over two hours.
How Long Does a Turkey Trot Take?
At an easy running pace of 10 minutes per mile, a 5K turkey trot takes about 31 minutes, and at an easy 3 mph walk it takes about an hour. Your own time depends on the distance and on whether you run, run-walk or walk:
| Distance | Running, 10:00 per mile | Run-walk, 13:00 per mile | Brisk walk, 3.5 mph | Easy walk, 3 mph |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 mile | 10:00 | 13:00 | 17:09 | 20:00 |
| 5K (3.1 miles) | 31:04 | 40:23 | 53:16 | 1:02:08 |
| 4.737 miles | 47:22 | 1:01:35 | 1:21:12 | 1:34:44 |
| 8K (4.97 miles) | 49:43 | 1:04:37 | 1:25:13 | 1:39:25 |
| 10K (6.2 miles) | 1:02:08 | 1:20:47 | 1:46:31 | 2:04:16 |
| 8 miles | 1:20:00 | 1:44:00 | 2:17:09 | 2:40:00 |
Finish times at an even pace, our arithmetic, rounded to the nearest second. A crowded start at a big trot can add a few minutes before you settle into your pace.
For context, the median finisher in U.S. 5K races in 2024 took about 36 minutes, and our 5K page breaks that down by age and sex. A Thanksgiving crowd includes plenty of families, walkers and first-timers, so finishing a 5K in 40 minutes to an hour puts you in good company. For a 10K trot, our page on how many miles a 10K is has mile splits and times by age.
Is the turkey trot hard?
A 5K turkey trot is one of the easier races you can enter. It's short enough to walk, the pace is up to you, and nobody is chasing a qualifying time on Thanksgiving morning. The 8K and longer trots are a real test if you haven't been running, so pick the distance you can finish comfortably, not the one your fastest cousin picked.

Buffalo's race has grown from those six runners in 1896 into a Thanksgiving fixture. Women didn't join the field until 1972. The race marked its 100th anniversary in 1995, passed 10,000 runners in 2008 and has capped its field at 14,000 for the past several years. Today it's an 8K, 4.97 miles, on a single loop that starts and finishes at the Buffalo Convention Center, and the 2026 race starts at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, according to the race's runner information page.
Other trots have long histories of their own:
- Manchester Road Race, Connecticut: the 2026 race is its 90th, run over 4.737 miles at 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, according to the race's website.
- Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot, Texas: a 5K and an 8-mile race that the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas says has been a Thanksgiving tradition for more than 55 years.
- Silicon Valley Turkey Trot, California: a 5K run/walk, a 10K and a kids' fun run in downtown San Jose, which its organizers bill as America's largest Thanksgiving Day race.
Is the Turkey Trot a fundraiser?
Many turkey trots are. The Buffalo race is YMCA Buffalo Niagara's largest fundraising event, and its proceeds support the Y's youth programs among other work. All proceeds of the Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot go to the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas. The Silicon Valley Turkey Trot donates its proceeds to four nonprofits, including two food banks, and the Manchester Road Race names helping neighbors find affordable shelter as its main charitable goal. Check your local race's page to see who your entry supports.
Is It OK to Walk a Turkey Trot?
Yes. Walking is normal at turkey trots, and the big races say so. The Buffalo YMCA Turkey Trot is open to "runners, joggers, and walkers of all ages and abilities," and a bus follows the back of the field to carry anyone who needs a lift to the finish. The Manchester Road Race rules state that walkers are welcome, and the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot bills its 5K as a run/walk. A few habits make walking a crowded race easier:
- Start near the back. Lining up behind the runners keeps faster people from weaving around you in the first mile.
- Walk two abreast at most, and keep to one side when the course narrows.
- Check the rules on strollers and dogs. Buffalo strongly discourages strollers and asks anyone who brings one to start at the back, and Manchester bans strollers, pets and anything on wheels from its course.
- Dress for the second mile, not the start. Late-November mornings are cold in much of the country, and our guide to dressing for cold runs has a layer-by-temperature list.
How Many Calories Does a Turkey Trot Burn?
A 5K turkey trot burns roughly 290 to 440 calories for a 150- to 200-pound adult. The 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities rates running at a 10-minute mile at 9.3 METs and brisk walking at 3.5 to 3.9 mph at 4.8 METs, where 1 MET is the energy you use sitting still. By those values, a 150-pound person burns about 330 calories running a 5K and about 290 walking it briskly. A 200-pound person burns about 440 running it and 390 walking it. An 8K adds about 60 percent to each number, and a 10K doubles them. All of these figures are our arithmetic from the Compendium.
That won't cancel out a holiday dinner, and it doesn't have to. The bigger payoff is the habit a race can start. Lee and colleagues (2014) followed 55,137 adults for about 15 years and found that runners had a 30 percent lower risk of death from any cause than non-runners. The benefit showed up with as little as 5 to 10 minutes of running a day, and it was largest in people who kept running for years.
A 4-Week Turkey Trot Plan for Thanksgiving 2026
Four weeks is enough to get comfortable with run-walk intervals for a 5K, but not enough to build from zero to running every step. Go gently. In a meta-analysis of running injury studies, Videbæk and colleagues (2015) found that novice runners got 17.8 injuries per 1,000 hours of running, more than twice the 7.7 of recreational runners. That's why this plan starts with more walking than running:
| Week | Run-walk sessions (3 a week) | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1, Nov 2 to 8 | 20 to 25 minutes: 1 minute of easy jogging, 2 minutes of walking, repeated | 2 sessions, 15 minutes |
| Week 2, Nov 9 to 15 | 25 to 30 minutes: 2 minutes jogging, 1 to 2 minutes walking | 2 sessions, 15 to 20 minutes |
| Week 3, Nov 16 to 22 | Two of 30 minutes at 3 minutes jogging, 1 minute walking, and one easy 40-minute session | 1 or 2 sessions |
| Race week, Nov 23 to 26 | Monday 20 easy minutes, Tuesday rest, Wednesday 10 to 15 easy minutes, Thursday race day | None |
Leave a rest day between run-walk sessions. For strength, do bodyweight or dumbbell squats, reverse lunges, glute bridges, calf raises and planks, two or three sets each. If something hurts beyond ordinary muscle soreness, repeat the previous week instead of moving on. On race day, use the run-walk ratio that felt good in week 3.
If you already run two or three times a week, enter the longer distance and use the four weeks to stretch your longest run by about 10 minutes a week, toward 50 minutes for an 8K or an hour for a 10K. If you're starting from zero and want to run the whole way, our 8-week 5K training plan for beginners is the better fit, and you can still walk parts of this year's trot.
Race morning
- Eat a light breakfast you know well two to three hours before the start, and save the feast for later.
- Arrive early. Big trots mean crowded parking and long lines.
- Start slower than feels right. The first mile of a crowded race feels easy, so hold back and save your effort for the second half.
What This Means for You
The answer to how long a Turkey Trot is comes down to the race you pick. Most are 5Ks, 3.1 miles, about 30 minutes of running or an hour of walking, and the longer trots run 4.7 to 8 miles. You can walk any of them. On Thanksgiving morning, lace up early, dress a layer lighter than feels right, start near the back and enjoy the crowd.
The race itself is the easy part. What usually goes wrong is the week after, when the momentum from a fun morning fades and the routine goes with it. If you've started and stopped before, that's a consistency problem, and a routine with some pull to it fixes it better than willpower. As Sarah, 27, put it: "First app that made exercise feel like something I chose, not forced."
A workout app that keeps you motivated can carry the strength sessions in this plan and keep you moving after the race. In FitCraft, 3D AI coaches demonstrate each bodyweight and dumbbell exercise and your coach says your name during the workout. Streaks keep the week on track, and a new quest every month, themed for the season, gives December a goal too.
