Every mile time is a product of the same variables. In descending order of how much they move the needle for most people:
1. Aerobic conditioning. The mile is long enough that it is largely aerobic. About 80 percent of the energy for a 6-minute mile comes from aerobic metabolism, and the fraction climbs as the mile gets slower. That is why regular easy running lowers your mile time faster than sprint work does. VO2 max, the ceiling on how much oxygen your body can use per minute, sets the top end. It is roughly 10 to 20 percent trainable for most people over months, and the training is not exotic: it is run.
2. Pacing. Nearly every first mile is run too hard in the first quarter and too slow in the last two. That produces a slower average than an even split of the same effort. It is not something you drill for, so much as something that gradually appears after months of consistent running.
5. Age. VO2 max declines roughly 10 percent per decade after age 30 in sedentary adults and closer to 5 percent per decade in adults who keep training. Trained older adults hold pace far better than the decline curve suggests. A 60-year-old marathoner may still run a 7-minute mile; a sedentary 30-year-old often cannot.
6. Sex. Men trend faster on average, driven by higher maximal oxygen uptake in absolute terms, higher hemoglobin mass, and higher lower-body power at the same training age. The gap is about 10 to 12 percent at the elite level and shrinks in trained recreational adults. It is not a moral fact, it is a physiological one.

How Long a Mile Takes for Absolute Beginners
If you cannot yet run a mile continuously, that is normal. A very common starting point is a run-walk interval: 60 seconds of easy jog, 90 seconds of walk, repeated for a mile.
