The rep-count question is the most common one in strength training, and it almost always has the wrong answer attached to it. People argue about 5x5 versus 3x10, they read that 8 to 12 is "the hypertrophy range" and 3 to 6 is "the strength range", and they conclude that the number is the thing.
It is not the thing. The thing is how hard the set was, how close to failure you took it, and how many hard sets per muscle you accumulate across the week. The rep number is a downstream consequence of the load you picked and the amount of effort you brought. Different combinations of load and rep count produce very similar outcomes, which is why the honest answer to "how many reps should I do" starts with another question: for what?
What The Rep Number Actually Controls
A set of 5 heavy reps and a set of 25 lighter reps look nothing alike, but they can produce nearly identical muscle growth. Here is what the rep number actually decides.
Load. Reps are a proxy for load. If you can do 30 clean reps, the load is under half of your one-rep max. If you can only do 3, it is above 85% of your one-rep max. The rep number is how you tell yourself and everyone else how heavy the weight is relative to your ceiling on that lift.
Session length. Higher reps take longer per set and gas you more. 5 sets of 5 heavy squats and 3 sets of 20 leg presses can drive similar leg growth, but one takes 25 minutes with long rests and the other takes 12 minutes with panting.
Neural adaptation. Heavier loads (fewer reps) recruit high-threshold motor units more, which is why they translate to strength gains best. Lighter loads with more reps still grow muscle, but the specific strength gain shows up less on the one-rep max.
What the rep number does not directly control is muscle growth. That is set by hard sets per muscle per week, taken close to failure, spread across two or more sessions.
What Does the Research Say About Rep Ranges?
The clearest single review is a 2017 meta-analysis by Schoenfeld, Grgic, Ogborn and Krieger in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. They pooled 21 studies comparing low-load training (>15 reps at <60% of one-rep max) with high-load training (<15 reps at >60% of one-rep max) and found no meaningful difference in muscle hypertrophy when sets were taken close to failure. Strength, by contrast, did favor higher loads: the heavier-load groups gained more one-rep-max strength across the board.
The same lab ran the direct comparison. Schoenfeld et al. (2015) randomised well-trained men to either a high-load protocol (3 sets of 8 to 12 reps at 70 to 80% of one-rep max) or a low-load protocol (3 sets of 25 to 35 reps at 30 to 50% of one-rep max), three sessions a week for eight weeks. Muscle growth in the biceps, triceps and quadriceps was similar between groups. One-rep-max strength on the bench press was significantly larger in the high-load group. The takeaway: heavier loads and lighter loads both grow muscle when the effort is real, but heavier loads still win on maximum strength.
Lasevicius et al. (2018) in the European Journal of Sport Science replicated the pattern in untrained men. Four groups trained the elbow flexors and knee extensors at 20%, 40%, 60% or 80% of one-rep max with equated total volume. The 20% group grew less muscle than the other three; 40%, 60% and 80% grew similar amounts. Strength gains scaled with load. The floor for muscle growth appears to be somewhere around 30% of one-rep max, or roughly 30 to 35 reps to failure. Below that, growth stalls.
And for the question of how hard the sets need to be, Refalo et al. (2023) meta-analysed the proximity-to-failure literature in Sports Medicine and concluded that stopping about 1 to 2 reps short of failure produced hypertrophy similar to training to failure. Stopping 4 or 5 reps short of failure did not. The band is narrow. If you finish a set thinking you could have done four more, that set probably did not do what you meant it to do.
The Rep Ranges By Goal
Practical ranges, with the load that gets you there and where they fit.
3 to 6 reps: strength
Load is 85% of one-rep max or higher. Use this for the heaviest compound lifts: back squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press, weighted pull-up. Rest 3 to 5 minutes between sets so each set can be genuinely heavy. Sets kept 1 to 2 reps in reserve most of the time; go to failure only on rare test sets. Two to five sets per lift, one or two lifts of this shape per session.
6 to 12 reps: the general-purpose range
Load is 70 to 85% of one-rep max. This is the range that fits most exercises, most goals and most schedules. It builds muscle efficiently, adds general strength, and finishes a set in under a minute so the session stays reasonable. Rest 90 seconds to 3 minutes. 3 to 5 sets per exercise. If you can only pick one range, this is the safe default.
12 to 20 reps: hypertrophy with less joint stress
Load is 55 to 70% of one-rep max. Same muscle-growth effect as the heavier range, provided you actually push each set close to failure. Better for machines, isolation work, and lifts where technique breaks down under heavy loads (lateral raises, leg extensions, hamstring curls, cable rows). Rest 60 to 120 seconds. 2 to 4 sets per exercise.
20+ reps: endurance and metabolic
Load is under 55% of one-rep max. Best for movements where higher rep counts are the point (bodyweight, kettlebell circuits, high-rep pump work, muscular endurance test prep). Muscle growth is possible in this range but requires very high effort, and the psychological cost of taking 30-rep sets close to failure is real.

How Many Sets Per Exercise
Rep count is only half the question. Sets per exercise, and sets per muscle per week, are the other half. Roughly:
- Per exercise: 2 to 5 sets. Most exercises live at 3 to 4. Heavy compounds can go higher, isolation work usually goes lower.
- Per muscle group per week: 10 to 20 hard sets for most people. Below 10 the growth curve flattens; above 20 the recovery cost rises faster than the results.
- Beginners: Start at about 10 hard sets per muscle per week and add slowly. Two full-body sessions with 3 sets on each major movement pattern already gets you most of the way there.

What Most People Get Wrong
Sets three reps short of failure. The single biggest waste of gym time. If your set of 10 could have been 14, you did not actually train hard, and the Refalo 2023 meta-analysis suggests that set did much less than a set you took to 1 or 2 reps in reserve. This is almost never about the rep number. It is about the pain of the last few reps.
Locking a rep range across every exercise. Pushing 4 sets of 5 on a lateral raise is worse than 3 sets of 15. Pushing 4 sets of 15 on a heavy squat leaves you unable to bring the load. Different exercises have different natural rep ranges, and picking a "program of 5x5" for everything is a distinctly novice pattern that plateaus fast.
Confusing volume with junk volume. Twenty easy sets a week are worse than ten hard sets. Volume only counts if it is close-to-failure work. Everything else is warmup practice.
Rep-counting through poor reps. A set of 10 with the last three done in bad form is a set of 7 with an injury waiting behind it. Progressive form is a real thing; grinding form is not. Ignoring the machine and isolation ranges. Not every exercise has to be heavy. Machines and isolation lifts are usually where the higher-rep work lives, and that work grows muscle just as reliably as heavy compound work when you push it. Refusing to lift under 8 reps is not hardcore; it is just leaving results on the floor.
A Practical Template
A workable session structure for someone who wants strength and muscle without living in the gym:
- Heavy compound (squat, deadlift, bench, overhead press, row): 4 sets of 5. 3 minutes rest. One or two per session.
- Secondary compound (front squat, Romanian deadlift, dumbbell bench, weighted pull-up): 3 sets of 8 to 10. 2 minutes rest. One or two per session.
- Accessory / machine work (leg press, lat pulldown, cable row, leg curl): 3 sets of 10 to 15. 90 seconds rest.
- Isolation (curl, extension, lateral raise, calf raise): 2 to 3 sets of 12 to 20. 60 seconds rest.
Push each set within 1 to 2 reps of failure most of the time. On the very heaviest compound sets, keep 2 to 3 in reserve to stay safe under load. Rep Ranges Change By Exercise, Not By Person
You will hear that some people "respond better" to low reps and others to high reps. There is a small individual-response signal in the data, but it is dwarfed by how well the range fits the exercise. Squats respond to reps of any range done hard. Lateral raises basically do not tolerate very low reps because the load is too small to matter. Deadlifts get ugly fast past about 8 reps because the technique demand rises with fatigue.
The practical translation is not "find your genetic rep range". It is "match the range to the lift". Heavy compounds in the low range. Secondary lifts in the middle. Machines and isolation in the higher range. That covers 95% of programming for 95% of people.
The Bottom Line
How many reps should you do? For strength, 3 to 6 with heavy load. For muscle, anywhere from 5 to 30, matched to the exercise, with each set taken close to failure. For endurance, 12 or more. For a general-purpose program, live mostly in the 6-to-12 range and vary from there.
The rep number is a downstream variable. What actually decides your progress is the load, the closeness to failure on each set, and the weekly total of hard sets per muscle. Change those and the reps will follow. Argue about 3x10 versus 5x5 for another year and the results will not.

That said, strength training in the 6-to-15 range with 2 to 4 sets per exercise is a reasonable default for anyone trying to lose fat while keeping muscle. Muscle preservation during weight loss depends far more on adequate protein (roughly 1.6 g per kg of body weight per day) and continued resistance training than on hitting a specific rep number. Do reps you can do safely and add cardio and daily movement around them.
Is 3 sets of 10 reps still a good rule?
It is a fine default, not a magic formula. Three sets of 10 accumulates 30 reps per exercise, which lands inside the range that grows muscle and builds general strength for most people. But it is not superior to 4 sets of 8, 5 sets of 5, or 2 sets of 15. Any programming that produces at least about 10 hard sets per muscle group per week, with sets taken close to failure most of the time, will work.
